Lichinga: Niassa 01 neighborhood calls for street lighting and better roads

Residents of Niassa 01 neighborhood have been living in darkness for years and continue to face difficulties moving around due to the poor condition of access roads. The community's main concerns are the lack of public street lighting and the deteriorated state of the roads.

At night, the neighborhood is plunged into complete darkness because of the absence or malfunction of streetlights. This situation creates fear and insecurity among residents.

“When it gets to 6:00 p.m., no one wants to leave their house. The darkness encourages robberies, and children are afraid to walk home from school,” said a local resident.

During the day, the challenges persist. The roads are full of potholes and covered with sand, making movement difficult for both pedestrians and vehicles. During the rainy season, conditions worsen as mud takes over the roads, leaving the neighborhood almost isolated.

Motorcycle taxis and vehicles often avoid entering the area, which increases transportation costs for residents. “To get here by minibus, we often have to walk part of the way because of the potholes. As for ambulances, they can hardly reach the neighborhood,” lamented another resident.

Residents say they have repeatedly raised their concerns with local authorities, but so far no action has been taken. The community is urgently appealing for the installation of public street lighting and the rehabilitation of the roads to improve safety and mobility for all residents. (Hermelinda João)
