Misinformation drives population to flee Quinga

After the defense and security forces liberated the administrative post of Quinga, in the Liúpo district, Nampula province, northern of Mozambique which had been taken over by the chief of the violent protesters, the population, along with local police, began a cleanup effort. The first step was to organize the Quinga health center to resume essential healthcare services.

However, the district director gathered the population to raise awareness, informing them that general services would resume the following Monday.

Nevertheless, the same individuals who attended the meeting began spreading false information as soon as they returned to their neighborhoods, causing unrest in Quinga.

In just three days, from February 15 to 17, 2025, the situation worsened due to the rumors being spread, particularly by local residents, not by government authorities. This misinformation has caused great concern for the local government.

The population began seeking refuge in Angoche, Mugincual, and other nearby villages, while some people took shelter in the woods, fearing the presence of the police who had come to restore security and free the post.

For example, this morning, February 17, 2025, three cars were dispatched to different points in the region, while other residents used motorbikes to leave the area.

The rumors about cholera, which allegedly started killing today, are among the main sources of panic.

Although health centers in various parts of Nampula province have been vandalized based on these rumors, there have been no reports of deaths related to cholera so far. (BP)
