Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) plans to build a gas-fired thermal power plant in Palma District, Cabo Delgado Province, to meet the growing demand for electricity in the province.
The project also includes the construction of a power transmission line linking Palma to the Metoro substation in Ancuabe District, ensuring that the electricity generated can be transmitted across the province.
Budgeted at US$146 million, the project is expected to significantly increase electricity supply in Cabo Delgado. EDM's Director for the Pemba Customer Service Area, Eitor Mathemele, said that once the facility becomes operational, the province will no longer rely exclusively on electricity supplied by the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant.
According to EDM, negotiations with one of the companies operating gas projects in Palma are at a very advanced stage. The company is working towards a preliminary agreement for the construction of the thermal power plant, with support from the government, in order to strengthen the province's energy independence.
Mathemele also explained that building a power generation facility in Palma alone would not be sufficient without the necessary transmission infrastructure. The goal is not only to supply electricity to Palma's load centre but also to provide reliable power to the entire Cabo Delgado Province.
As part of the project, a 220-kV transmission line will also be built between Palma and Metoro, which serves as a key connection point to the national electricity grid. The entire project will be based on natural gas and is currently in the conceptual phase. (BP)
