Local Voices: Pemba at risk of disease contamination due to garbage on occess roads

Lixo algures da cidade de Pemba

The city of Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique, faces a high risk of disease contamination due to the large amount of accumulated garbage on the access roads of many streets.

For example, the second street after the Osman Yancob group store is filled with an ever-increasing pile of garbage. It has become a dumping ground, which poses a risk to residents living nearby.

While residents complain, they raise questions that remain unanswered, notably: Is the municipality of Pemba unaware of this? Are they unaware of the risks it causes? They justify the situation by claiming that it is still the rainy season.

There are other streets in the city facing garbage problems. Not because of a cleaning issue, but because recent events have posed challenges to municipal management. However, the reality is that to pass through these areas, people have to wear masks to avoid the unpleasant odor.

However, the municipal management announced last week that a significant number of garbage containers had been allocated and would soon be placed in specific locations for public use.

In total, the municipality received 16 containers through a partner. Last week, after Cyclone Chido passed, leaving a lot of debris in the city, a group of young people and other individuals came together for a cleaning campaign. However, this is not enough to free the city from the risk of contracting diseases such as diarrhea and malaria. (Sifa Artur)
