Nampula: Bridge damaged for more than 10 years abandoned by local government in Nacala

This is the bridge that provides access to the neighborhoods of Tielela and Matola, in Nacala district northern of Mozambique which has been damaged for over 10 years.

This infrastructure is obstructed due to heavy rains that occurred in past years, interrupting communication between the neighborhoods of Matola and Tielela. Users used to rely on this route to travel to the city of Nacala, among other locations.

In this context, Mozanorte team visited the site and encountered the deplorable situation that residents face in using this route, having to make efforts to reach various parts of the city.

Residents interviewed in the Tielela neighborhood shared their experiences of using the road. Mr. Cardoso Oscar Cardoso shared his story "I have been a resident of Tielela for over 30 years because I am from here. This bridge was destroyed by the rain, and it caused us problems because it was an easy route to the machamba. Even the military used this route to reach the engineering barracks," said Mr. Cardoso.

Alfredo Cândido, who also shared his testimony, stated "Two municipal council terms have passed, and they have not been able to resolve the problem. The former president Novinte, during his electoral campaign, made promises for this neighborhood, but nothing was done. There were signs of construction materials left here, and some youths took advantage of the opportunity to steal everything. It was not carried forward. Now, we are waiting for the new term, hoping they will solve the problem."

It is important to note that the access road is in a deteriorated condition. Residents of the Matola neighborhood, in order to reach the city, use the road by the Petromoc fuel terminal, putting their lives at risk due to the movement of trucks carrying dangerous cargo. Moreover, military personnel from the engineering barracks can no longer pass with their military vehicles and must enter on foot. (Gabriel Cassimo)
