Nampula: lobster traders in Liupo-Quinga facing crisis due to sales halt

Lobster traders in the Quinga administrative post, located in the Liupo district, Nampula province in northern of Mozambique are facing a severe crisis after being unable to sell their products for more than three months.

Lobster trading is a traditional activity in the region, but the prolonged halt has caused significant losses, with the lobsters still trapped in the cages, losing weight and dying due to the extended waiting period.

According to the traders, the cages where the lobsters are kept are beginning to be infiltrated by fresh water, which further worsens the situation, as the lobsters cannot survive in these conditions.

The Chinese company Wiji Lda, which has been responsible for purchasing lobsters in the region, expressed interest in continuing to buy the product but voiced concerns due to recent events in the area.

The company's representative stated that if the Liupo district government allows Wiji Lda to resume purchasing, they will request security guarantees to prevent product loss, as the current insecurity has generated uncertainty. "If the district government accepts our entry, we will ask for effective security to ensure the product is not lost," said the representative.

However, the situation in the Liupo district appears to be returning to normal, with the population resuming their daily activities.

The maritime authorities, who were always present during lobster buying operations, ensured public order and safety during the purchasing processes, which had contributed to the stable continuity of the trade in the past.

Wiji Lda, headquartered in Nacala, had previously purchased lobsters not only in Quinga but also in other locations such as Angoche and Ilha de Moçambique.

With the prospect of resuming purchases, the traders are waiting for a solution from local authorities to alleviate the losses and allow the continuation of this important economic activity for the region. (BP in Liupo)
