Nampula: Nacala municipal council expands Eduardo Mondlane avenue road

The main road providing access to the lower city, from the port roundabout to the Eduardo Mondlane statue, also known as the Juma wholesale market, will undergo expansion and rehabilitation over a period of 4 months. Recently, this road has experienced heavy traffic congestion during peak hours, particularly in the area from Moti Bakery to the Juma market.

According to Carlos Mateus, Director of the Image and Communication Office of the Nacala Municipality, the rehabilitation and expansion of the infrastructure involved an investment of fifteen million meticais, sourced from the municipal treasury.

Some residents interviewed by Mozanorte on Thursday morning shared their opinions about the project "Regarding the rehabilitation of this street, or rather, Eduardo Mondlane Avenue, it is very important as it will bring benefits in the future. There is a lot of traffic congestion on this street, especially around the FIPAG area. It’s complicated to drive during lunchtime and also at the end of the day. Many cars and motorcycles pass through here, and the road is very narrow. Overtaking is difficult, and it’s normal to see a line of cars from Belomonte to the entrance of the urban hospital," said Mr. Mendonça de Sousa.

Assuste Sualehe, a semi-collective transport operator, added "This area is very difficult to pass through, almost at all times. I had an accident last year, in August, because of this very road. When I see that they are expanding the road, I consider it a benefit. I am very happy that the municipality is addressing this street. In the previous term, very little was done; they only paved the road from Moti Bakery to Belmonte, but they didn’t expand it."

Carlos Mateus, Director of the Image and Communication Office, representing the Councillor for Urban Planning, spoke about the rehabilitation and expansion process of Eduardo Mondlane Avenue

"The Municipal Council is carrying out the expansion of Eduardo Mondlane Avenue, covering a stretch of 3 kilometers. We began at the Eduardo Mondlane statue and extended to the Desportivo Club. The ongoing work aims to create 4 traffic lanes, a necessary measure due to the congestion observed during peak hours."

It is important to note that Eduardo Mondlane Avenue will be expanded and rehabilitated over a stretch of 3 kilometers, with the completion of the project expected within 4 months. (Gabriel Cassimo)
