President Daniel Chapo announced on Wednesday (2) the relocation of the Northern Operational Theater Command from Pemba to Mocímboa da Praia, a move intended to bring the command structure closer to the main areas of counterterrorism operations in Cabo Delgado.
The announcement was made during a working visit to the province, where the Head of State explained that the decision was driven by the need to strengthen the operational capacity of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS).
"We have taken this decision so that we can be closer to the center of operations and the core of the fight against the terrorists. From here, we are closer to Palma, Macomia, Quissanga, and the other districts in the northern zone," Daniel Chapo said in a press statement.
Before traveling to Mocímboa da Praia, the President visited the district of Mueda, where he met with the command of the Local Force. During the meeting, he listened to the fighters' main concerns and encouraged them to continue their mission with determination, discipline, and patriotism.
It was not clear whether issues relating to alleged human rights violations by members of the Local Force many of whom are former veterans of Mozambique's liberation struggle were discussed.
During the visit, Daniel Chapo reiterated the government's commitment to strengthening the capabilities of the Defence and Security Forces through investments in infrastructure, equipment, logistics, training, and other operational needs.
"We will invest in the construction of our infrastructure, equipment, logistics, training, and everything else that is necessary," he pledged once again. (MozaNorte)
