Children aged between 12 and 14 are being used as human shields by terrorist groups during recent incursions in Cabo Delgado districts, according to the provincial governor, Valige Tauabo.
During a visit this week to the administrative post of Mbau formerly a strategic base for insurgents Governor Tauabo revealed that child abductions have become part of a new tactic aimed at hindering the operations of Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) and their Rwandan counterparts.
“They are placing children at the front lines to prevent military offensives. This is a serious violation of human rights,” said Tauabo, voicing concern over the operational challenges and humanitarian consequences posed by this strategy".
On the occasion, the governor reaffirmed the authorities’ commitment to rescuing the victims and restoring security in the region, at a time when attacks are regaining intensity in isolated parts of the province.
In recent months including across social media there has been growing debate around an alleged campaign to recruit children into terrorist ranks.
According to international legal frameworks, Defence and Security Forces must avoid targeting minors involved in armed conflict, as doing so would also constitute a violation of children’s rights. (Mozanorte)
