Tanzania assumes shared responsibility in response to cross-border attacks

In light of consistent evidence that some individuals involved in criminal activities and armed attacks in Niassa Province originate from Tanzania, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has expressed its full willingness to collaborate with Mozambique in identifying and holding those individuals accountable.

This assurance was given on Wednesday, September 24, by Hamad Khamis Hamad, High Commissioner of the United Republic of Tanzania to Mozambique, Madagascar, and the Kingdom of Eswatini, during an audience with the Secretary of State in Niassa Province, Silva Fernando Livone, according to a statement released on official digital platforms.

According to the same statement, Mozambican authorities expressed growing concern over reports of foreign nationals including Tanzanian citizens being involved in actions that promote instability, the illegal exploitation of natural resources, and terrorist-related activities in border areas of the province.

Silva Fernando Livone emphasized that strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries necessarily depends on a coordinated response to shared challenges, including tighter border control and combating networks that operate illegally on both sides.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to strengthen communication channels between border authorities, establish joint surveillance teams, and share strategic information to help stop the advance of armed or criminal groups. (Mozanorte)
