At this moment, Mozanorte is the best community-based news website covering social issues in northern Mozambique. This has not been easy, as it is work carried out by volunteers in the name of access to verified information.
On a day like today, one year ago, the Mozanorte newspaper took its first steps, marking the beginning of a story built on vision, courage, and commitment to the truth. A simple yet powerful idea was born: to value rural areas, give space to information often ignored by mainstream media, and amplify voices that are rarely heard.
Mozanorte emerged as the voice of volunteer journalists and community activists who, until then, had no platform to tell everyday stories, events, and challenges experienced in northern Mozambique. It was in this context that a project was born with the purpose of informing about the north of the country, despite countless obstacles, always guided by the mission of generating positive impact and serving communities.
From the very beginning, Mozanorte became a reference point and an inspiration for all those who wish to better understand northern Mozambique. With no fixed funding and no major partnerships, but with immense determination, the newspaper has established itself as a symbol of committed, innovative, and responsible community journalism. A journalism that believes in the right to information, freedom of the press, and the power of local stories.
Throughout this first year, we have faced difficulties, scarce resources, and moments of uncertainty. Even so, we have continued forward because we believe there are people who read us, follow us, value us, and encourage us. Proof of this lies in the recognition we have achieved: today, Mozanorte has already been referenced by other newspapers, television stations, civil society organizations, security institutions, researchers, and various entities. Without a doubt, we have become a credible source of rural information in northern Mozambique. We are the largest archive of diverse rural information in northern Mozambique.
Celebrating one year of existence is celebrating collective effort, resilience, and hope. It is reaffirming the commitment to continue informing, evolving, and strengthening an independent, community-based news brand that is close to the people. We also train increasingly strong, professional, and well-respected media professionals in their areas of operation. And, without a doubt, during this period we have influenced changes and decisions in governance and in society.
Finally, it is never too much to remember how important it is to support independent rural and community journalism it is an investment in democracy and access to information. Whether through partnerships, advertising, or other forms of collaboration, your support is essential for Mozanorte to continue being the voice of rural journalism in northern Mozambique.
