Rains spare no roads in Cabo Delgado

Road traffic in several districts of Cabo Delgado province is seriously compromised due to the heavy rains marking the current rainy season.

The National Roads Administration (ANE) acknowledges that several access roads are either cut off or operating under restricted conditions, affecting the mobility of people and the transportation of goods.

According to Cláudio João, from ANE’s planning department, the most worrying case is the Mecúfi–Mazeze road, which remains completely impassable following the collapse of the bridge over the Megaruma River.

He said there is, for now, no concrete forecast for the restoration of the connection, and the disruption may persist until the end of the current rainy season.

Other road sections are also facing significant difficulties. The Metuge–Quissanga road has restricted traffic due to ongoing works and temporary detours, which are easily affected by rainfall. On the Balama–Mavala road, particularly in the Chipembe dam area, traffic is operating with limitations, while on the Mecúfi–Megaruma road, recurring flooding in Natu village continues to concern the authorities.

On a positive note, the National Roads Administration announced the restoration of traffic on the Macomia–Messalo River road, following emergency interventions carried out to ensure the safe passage of vehicles.

As a preventive measure, ANE has reinforced the ban on the circulation of vehicles weighing more than six tonnes on unpaved roads, as well as night-time travel, with the aim of reducing accidents and preventing rapid road deterioration.

The institution assures that technical teams are on the ground, monitoring the situation and intervening whenever possible, at a time when weather conditions continue to challenge the province’s road network. These details were presented last week in Pemba during a meeting of the Emergency Operations Committee. (Mozanorte)
