Niassa Province has been facing a worrying situation since the start of the rainy season, marked by heavy rainfall that has so far resulted in at least 12 deaths and 18 injured people.
Authorities warn that the situation may worsen in the coming days if the forecasted rains continue in the region.
According to the Provincial Delegate of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), Isabel Cavo, emergency teams are on standby to respond to new incidents, at a time when several communities remain vulnerable.
As an immediate response, INGD has distributed shelter kits, food supplies, and household utensils to affected families in the districts of Lichinga, Lago, Mecula, Ngaúma, Mandimba, Chimbunila, and Marrupa. However, assistance has been hampered by poor road conditions, with some districts, such as Mecula and Mavago, experiencing serious access difficulties.
Authorities are urging the population to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines, while efforts continue to restore access routes and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the most affected areas. (Mozanorte)
