Whereabouts of two boats carrying dozens of fishermen unknown in Mocímboa da Praia

In Mocímboa da Praia, people are mourning on two fronts: first, the death of 13 fishermen, allegedly caused by members of the Navy, and second, the disappearance of others aboard two fishing boats.

According to Mozanorte, on Sunday the 15th, three boats were engaged in fishing activities in the areas of Kalugo and Siri Siri. In the morning, a vessel believed to belong to Mozambican forces attacked them without mercy. On one of the boats, which had around 20 people on board, 13 are reported to have lost their lives, while others were injured and are receiving treatment at Pemba Hospital, the largest health facility in Cabo Delgado Province.

However, the whereabouts of the other two boats each carrying approximately the same number of fishermen as the one that was attacked remain unknown.

In this context, if they were not detained by members of the Navy, there are fears, based on local reports, that they may also have been killed.

Residents say many families across the town are in mourning, particularly in the Ntende residential area, from where many of the fishermen had departed.

Meanwhile, among residents of Mocímboa da Praia, some argue that the victims took the risk by fishing in areas considered “red zones” due to the presence of terrorists. However, this view is contested by those who maintain that human rights must always be respected. (Mozanorte)
