Maritime accidents and deaths in Quinga Administrative Post, Liupo District, Nampula Province, continue to be reported frequently. The situation has been worsening, particularly in 2026.
Every month, between one and three maritime accidents occur along the beaches and at fishing centres in Quinga, some of which result in fatalities. This situation contrasts with previous years. So far, the maritime authorities in the administrative post have been unable to explain the causes of these accidents.
On the afternoon of August 6, 2026, a fisherman died while carrying out activities at sea aboard a vessel known as Caça do Mar. According to his colleagues, the victim had not been feeling well before the incident. The case occurred at the Namelene fishing centre.
The victim was a diver who had worked on the vessel for many years. He was originally from Mogincual District.
A multisectoral team comprising INAMAR, PCLF, CCP, ITRANSMAR, Health and Fisheries officials was present at the scene to carry out the necessary procedures. The body was later handed over to the family for the funeral ceremonies.
Residents and fishermen have expressed concern and sadness over the frequency of such incidents along the coast. They also lament the lack of more effective intervention by the relevant authorities, particularly in providing support to affected families.
