A rare case occurred on December 1st when Alima Amisse Henriques, 24 years old, a resident of the Quiriquidji community in the Sangange area, a municipal locality of the city of Angoche, gave birth to SIAMESE twins at the largest hospital in Angoche, the Rural Hospital. The most concerning aspect was that the case was not reported at the hospital, and the twins were transferred to the Central Hospital of Nampula for possible surgery, only to be sent back home afterward.
Due to the omission by the hospital authorities, we were
caught by surprise when a group of radio program producers visited the
community and encountered the situation. The young mother, sad and unsure of
what to do, told the radio team on site "I don't know what to do because I
have no financial means, let alone the ability to feed my daughters who were
born conjoined. To feed them, I've been using coconut milk," said Alima
Henriques in a desperate tone.
When questioned by the team present, Alima expressed
dissatisfaction with the response and treatment she received when the case was
transferred to the largest hospital in Nampula province. This was the reason
that led her to return to her home to care for her daughters.
In response, the reporting team from Radio Parapato,
shocked by the situation, tried to contact the head of the Social Action
Department at the District Health Services for Women and Social Action on
Monday, January 6, 2025. He admitted that he was hearing about the case for the
first time with surprise.
Raul Domingos acknowledged the negligence by the
responsible personnel at the Rural Hospital of Angoche for not communicating in
advance regarding the need for nutritional assistance for the newborns but
promised to take action on the case.
It is worth noting that this is one of the first and rare
cases recorded in Angoche. The Quiriquidji community belongs to the Sangage
locality, an area known for the extraction of heavy sand minerals in Angoche,
located over 40 kilometers from the city. (LL)
