May 11, 2025 – Cabo Delgado,
Mozambique Fighters linked to the extremist group Islamic State launched a
violent attack on 8 May a Mozambican military camp in the village of De Maio, located
in the Muidumbe district of Cabo Delgado province.
According to an
Arabic-language publication, the attack resulted in the deaths of 11 soldiers
from the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces.
During the assault, the
insurgents reportedly seized a significant number of weapons and military
equipment, raising further concerns about the group’s growing strength in the
region. The attack marks another episode in the insurgency that has plagued
northern Mozambique since 2017, further destabilizing the security situation in
Cabo Delgado.
Mozambican authorities have not
yet released an official statement or casualty report regarding the incident.
Military operations in the
area have included reinforcements from Rwandan troops, who themselves lost
three members on May 3 in Katupa. However, Rwandan state media reported that
several terrorists were killed in retaliation during operations in the Katupa
area, within Macomia district. (Mozanorte)
