Two young men detained in Macomia freed with help from Rwandan Forces

On the 13th of the current month in 2025, residents of Macomia district, in Cabo Delgado province, held a protest around 9 a.m. demanding the release of two young men detained by the Mozambican police.

The young men were arrested under different circumstances. One of them was accused of carrying out illegal electrical connections in several neighborhoods of Macomia. The situation quickly escalated, with many residents fleeing into the bush in fear, as gunshots were reportedly fired.

The second young man was identified by police as the main instigator of the protest. Despite the arrests, the crowd refused to disperse without the release of both detainees, prompting police to fire warning shots. Only then did the demonstrators leave the District Command premises.

The following day, Rwandan soldiers met with community members to investigate the incident. After hearing their accounts, the soldiers asked whether the young men had been released.

“Upon learning that the two were still in police custody, the Rwandan forces went to the Macomia District Command where most of the Mozambican forces are based to demand their release”, Mozanorte was told by a good source. BP
