Fishermen refuse to register nets and boats in Liúpo

In the district of Liúpo, specifically in the administrative post of Quinga, the majority of the population depends on fishing for their livelihood. Each year, maritime authorities carry out inspections and the registration of fishing boats and nets.

In previous years, fishermen in Quinga maintained good cooperation with maritime and fisheries authorities throughout this process. However, this year, the situation has been notably different.

About a month ago, the relevant authorities visited the administrative post of Quinga to launch the registration process, bringing together a number of fishermen from the local beach fishing centers.

During the opening of the campaign, there was good collaboration between the fishermen and the institutions present. Some fishermen even promised to make the payment on the same day, as the event initially served as an awareness session.

However, around two weeks ago, fishermen from the Selela and Alima fishing centers refused to register or pay for their nets and boats. According to them: "Why should we pay, when in the markets of our district, our province, and even our country, no one pays? Not even at toll gates is there a charge, so why only us?"

Faced with this response, the authorities had no immediate answer, and the process was halted. As a result, relevant institutions such as PCLF, CCP, INTRANSMAR, the Directorate of Fisheries, and INAMAR held a meeting on June 27, 2025, at 8:00 AM, at the administrative post of Quinga.

The objective of the meeting was to develop strategies for improving cooperation and engagement with the fishermen. As a result, awareness sessions have begun on the beaches, particularly at the fishing centers with the highest concentrations of fishermen.

The awareness campaign will not be limited to the fisheries sector; it will extend to all sectors operating in the maritime area of this administrative post.

The main goal is to explain, step by step, the importance of registering fishing boats and nets. BP
