The
community of Mussoma, located in Lugenda, Mecula District, Niassa Province, was
shaken by a tragic fire on Friday, June 28, which destroyed the homes of four
families.
Reports
indicate that the fire resulted from uncontrolled bush burning, a common and
dangerous practice in the region.
In
response to the incident, the Mecula District Government acted promptly,
demonstrating solidarity and providing immediate assistance to the victims.
On
July 1, a government team led by Eugénio Carlos Fazenda, Director of Mecula's
Health, Women, and Social Action Services (SDSMAS) and representative of the
Interim Administrator, visited the village of Mussoma to support the displaced
families.
Essential
items such as flour, rice, beans, and tarpaulins were distributed to help with
reconstruction and sustenance for the affected households.
In
statements to the press, Eugénio Carlos Fazenda expressed the government's
solidarity and encouraged residents to begin rebuilding their homes. He also
took the opportunity to reiterate warnings against the practice of uncontrolled
burning, a habit that poses a serious risk to the safety and property of local
communities.
Luís Ndala, Lurdes Valentim, and Evaristo Jussa, some of the residents who lost everything in the fire, shared their despair with our team "We lost everything we had," they said, visibly shaken.
Nevertheless,
they expressed deep gratitude for the support received from the district
government during this time of great hardship. (Ma Mataka)
