PRM Commander addresses security concerns in Mocímboa da Praia

But will the residents of Mocímboa da Praia fall for the same old story? Authorities believe that a lack of communication between them and the local population is contributing to persistent insecurity in the region.

In an effort to calm public concerns and clarify the current security situation, the District Administrator of Mocímboa da Praia, Sérgio Domingos Cipriano, convened a meeting with the District Commander of the Mozambican Police (PRM) and Coordinator of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS), Alberto Napovo.

The meeting, held at the administrative post headquarters, saw Commander Napovo speak candidly about the challenges faced by security forces and called for stronger cooperation between the community and state institutions, according to a local publication.

"There is no need to abandon the district. Security exists and it exists in full force. But unfortunately, something is missing: communication. Communication between the Forces and the communities,” said Napovo, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement in the fight against insurgency.

The commander raised alarming concerns about enemy infiltration within local communities, pointing out that many young people recruited by terrorist groups share the same cultural and linguistic backgrounds as the local population.

"From experience in the field, we’ve found that about 80% of the youths who joined terrorism speak maconde, swahili or kimwani as their mother tongue. They are children of this land, born and raised among us. When did they go astray?” he asked, in a reflective tone.

Napovo further questioned how the insurgents receive intelligence on military positions enough to mislead the regular forces and how they are fed without resorting to consistent looting.

"All of this suggests that the enemy is most likely among us,” he warned, stressing the urgency of community members coming forward with information.

He concluded by stating that the end of the war in Mocímboa da Praia and the wider region will largely depend on the willingness of the local population to cooperate with authorities and isolate those who pose a threat to peace.

Still, most local business owners have already packed up and left, waiting for stability before they consider returning. (Mozanorte)
