Wave of Misinformation behind exodus in Mocímboa da Praia- claims Administrator

A wave of misinformation has been causing public alarm and a mass exodus from the administrative town of Mocímboa da Praia, in Cabo Delgado. This has been driven by the spread of unverified reports alleging possible terrorist attacks on September 25th and October 5th, creating panic among residents.

Despite the lack of official confirmation and the absence of any movements suggesting imminent attacks, many locals have chosen to flee the town due to fears over security. This situation is undermining public order and tranquillity, according to the local administrator, cited in a statement from the Government’s Communication and Image Office.

In response, District Administrator Sérgio Domingos Cipriano is leading a campaign of visits to various sectors and local communities. The aim is to reassure the population and counter the spread of unfounded rumours. Cipriano is urging trust in the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), stressing that structural work is underway to strengthen security in the region.

The District Government believes in the area's stability and is working to ensure that Mocímboa da Praia remains safe and protected, said the Administrator, calling for calm and for the public to reject unreliable sources of information.

Authorities emphasize that any news should be verified through official channels, and they call on the public to help fight misinformation, which not only undermines trust but also jeopardizes efforts to rebuild and restore normal life in the district. (Mozanorte)
