Critical Water and Sanitation conditions affect displaced families at Alua reception center

The Alua reception center, in the Eráti district, also experienced extremely precarious conditions affecting hundreds of displaced families seeking refuge there.

The lack of potable water, adequate sanitation, and protection mechanisms placed women, children, and girls at high risk.

According to information collected on-site, there were no proper latrines for the displaced population, forcing adults and children to use improvised areas. The situation was even more serious for women and girls, who were forced to bathe in open spaces, exposing themselves to risks of violence and insecurity.

The shortage of drinking water was also a major concern. More than 100 people relied on a single untreated water source and a contaminated stream, increasing the risk of waterborne disease outbreaks, although a borehole was later opened.

Beyond water and sanitation issues, other critical gaps were identified at the center. These included the absence of referral and case follow-up services, the constant mobility of families, which made ongoing support difficult, and the lack of adequate protection mechanisms for women, girls, and children.

Local authorities also acknowledged the limited capacity of the center, which could not accommodate the arrival of new displaced families, worsening overcrowding and increasing protection risks. This limitation justified the rapid deactivation of the center.

The situation at the Alua center underscores the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian interventions to ensure dignified and safe conditions for displaced populations. (Mozanorte)
