The Nampula Provincial Health Directorate (DPS) is carrying out a campaign aimed at providing hydrocele surgery to 700 men. The initiative runs until March 3 and is being implemented with the support of cooperation partners.
The operation involves a team of 10 surgical technicians mobilized to respond to the high demand for treatment. According to the DPS representative, Nalcil Biassone, the campaign includes an initial phase at Marrere General Hospital.
The surgical capacity-building process will involve approximately 200 patients who will undergo operations at Marrere General Hospital, with the goal of reaching a minimum target of 500 hydrocele surgeries.
The official added that the province faces a large number of accumulated cases over the past five years.
The campaign covers eight districts of Nampula province, namely Angoche, Monapo, Nacala-Porto, Memba, Eráti, Ribáuè, and Nampula City. The initiative also extends to the districts of Maganja da Costa and Morrumbala in neighboring Zambézia province.
Meanwhile, António Carlos, a surgeon at Nampula Central Hospital, highlighted that the increase in cases in Nampula and Zambézia provinces has been a cause for concern.
“We are doing this because we have seen that in these two provinces, namely Zambézia and Nampula, there has been an increase of 30,000 patients. However, the Government has been making several efforts to combat the disease, especially for those cases that were not reached during previous campaigns and are now presenting complications such as enlargement of the scrotum and elephantiasis,” he said.
Among the beneficiaries, the campaign is seen as an opportunity to regain self-esteem and improve quality of life. Patients suffering from the condition report facing numerous difficulties.
Hydrocele, characterized by the accumulation of fluid in the testicles, can lead to reduced productivity, social isolation, and family constraints. Through this campaign, health authorities aim to significantly reduce the waiting list and restore dignity to affected patients. Mozanorte
