Municipal workers in Nacala detained while attempting to strike

Thirteen employees of the Nacala Municipal Council, in Nampula Province, northern Mozambique, were detained after attempting to stage a strike on the morning of Monday, March 2 of the current year. The arrests were carried out by the Polícia da República de Moçambique (PRM).

Reports indicate that a total of 14 municipal council workers were detained around midnight while allegedly preparing to paralyze activities.

Speaking anonymously and without a recorded interview, one municipal employee stated that there was a standoff at the time of the attempted strike. According to the source, 14 workers were detained in connection with the incident, although there are indications that the number of participants involved may be higher, with some reportedly at an unknown location.

In a telephone conversation, the district command of the Polícia da República de Moçambique in Nacala confirmed the detention of the workers and promised to provide further details on the case.

Attempts were also made to contact the Mayor of Nacala, Faruk Momade Nuro, but he did not answer calls from the press.

Information obtained indicates that the striking workers had previously issued a written notice announcing the possible suspension of activities in protest over several employment benefits. Despite the arrests, sources say the workers remain determined and insist they will not be intimidated, as they continue to demand their rights.

At the time of publication, the Municipality of Nacala was operating normally. (Gabriel Cassimo)
