More than 21,000 people displaced by armed attacks in Ancuabe

Ancuabe (Mozanorte)-At least 21,658 people were displaced between 1 May and 10 June 2026 following attacks and fears of further attacks by Non-State Armed Groups (NSAGs) in Ancuabe District, Cabo Delgado Province.

According to data collected by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) through its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), those affected sought refuge in host communities and displacement sites across the districts of Ancuabe, Chiure and Montepuez.

The largest concentrations of displaced people were recorded in the established sites of Milamba Expansão, Nanjua A, Nanjua B and Meza-Sede, which together are hosting 10,367 individuals. Most of the displaced population fled from the localities of Nacoja, Nnonia, Namacuile, Minheuene, Nanjua and Meza, among other areas affected by insecurity in Ancuabe District.

The IOM reports that the latest wave of displacement was triggered by attacks and growing fears of further incursions by armed groups, particularly in the localities of Minheuene and Nnonia. Over a three-week period, insecurity forced thousands of residents to leave their homes and seek safety elsewhere.

Protection partners operating in the affected areas have expressed concern over significant risks facing displaced communities, including family separation, gender-based violence, loss of personal documentation and psychosocial distress.

Humanitarian agencies and local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, but the duration of displacement remains uncertain as security concerns persist in the areas of origin.

Cabo Delgado Province has been affected by an armed insurgency for several years, a conflict that continues to drive internal displacement and deepen humanitarian needs across the region. (Mozanorte)
