Cabo Delgado: citizen killed by suspected local force agents in Montepuez

A national citizen, residing in the city of Montepuez, in the southern part of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, was killed around 7 PM on January 3rd of this year.

The victim was in the company of a friend with whom he was conversing outside the house of his companion.

Local residents reported that the two had gone for a walk, and upon arriving at the young woman's house, they sat outside the yard to get some fresh air. It was then that two men in local force uniforms, commonly referred to as "Chimoio," approached and fired a shot. The citizen fell, while the young woman lost consciousness at the scene.

"The victim died on the spot, and the burial took place on the afternoon of January 4th of the current year. Therefore, Montepuez is in such a situation," narrated a local resident to Mozanorte.

Another resident mentioned that many locals are in shock due to the brutality of the crime's perpetrators.

"Montepuez is afraid of what may come next from the protesters because we think this is related to the protest," she said.

On the same night, both the deceased and his companion were taken to the Montepuez Rural Hospital.

The victim, who was also an informal local trader, was 34 years old. No official statement from local authorities has been released.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that during the protests, another nine residents lost their lives, allegedly shot by defense and security force agents.

With this death, alongside the growing fear and apprehension, local residents are reminded of the recent past when the city was the scene of various deadly crimes that made the region the most dangerous part of Cabo Delgado province. (Mozanorte)
