Nampula: Cyclone Dikeledi causes damage in Nacala-Porto

Difficult times for many families in the city of Nacala-Porto, in the province of Nampula, northern Mozambique. Since the early hours of January 13, 2025, there have been temperature changes, heavy rain, and a very strong storm, which left around 200 families homeless and also damaged almost all roads, leaving them full of potholes.

The situation regarding the potholes, which the previous municipal administration failed to address, has worsened further. It’s not just about precarious homes; even improved houses and walls were not spared.

The data presented in this report by Mozanorte is from the Ontupaia neighborhood, particularly in the area of the 1st of June market.

Currently, with the lack of lighting over the past two days, there has been an increased demand for candles and lanterns, as EDM (Electricidade de Moçambique) has yet to start inspecting the damage. Many poles have fallen in the neighborhood, and the transformers (PTs) exploded.

In addition to messages received via cell phones, local leadership alerted residents to prepare ahead of the storm.

However, the district government has yet to make a statement or visit the families who lost their homes. This number of 200 families will likely increase, as the walls of the houses are wet and, with the sun, they are starting to collapse.

Families are already attempting to reorganize their homes, but there are still signs that the wind has not fully passed. The following images show the reality of Nacala-Porto. (BP in Nacala-Porto)
