The president of the National Disaster Management
Institute (INGD) visited, on the morning of Wednesday, 15, the district of
Mossuril, Nampula, in northern Mozambique, which was also affected by the
tropical cyclone Dikeledi, which caused extensive damage in the region last
Monday.
Luísa Meque, who visited several neighborhoods in the
Mossuril district, made multiple appeals to the communities for the
reconstruction of improved houses, in order to prevent them from becoming
victims of future storms, similar to the destruction caused by cyclone
Dikeledi.
“The survey we are conducting aims to assess how many
houses were destroyed, those that lost part of their structure, those that
collapsed completely, or those that no longer exist. Our team will work with
the communities, seeking solutions to build houses that are more resistant to
the impact of strong winds,” emphasized Luísa Meque, president of INGD.
In the same context, Meque highlighted the importance of good practices in using bricks for constructing safer houses.
“We need to ensure that if walls collapse, they do not
cause injuries. The techniques we are presenting are meant to ensure the
protection of the walls. Unfired bricks, when they come into contact with
water, collapse easily, which can cause human harm, while fired bricks are more
resistant to water, both inside and outside the house. The roofing should also
be improved, so that, in the event of strong winds, the roof is not removed. We
are here to express our solidarity and to work with various partners who are
supporting the situation, whether through food aid or construction materials.”
In the province of Nampula, within less than a month, two
cyclones have already affected the region, leaving several families homeless.
At the moment, the province is facing traffic issues on
four roads, including the one from Corrane to Nampula city, Liúpo to Angoche,
and Nametil to Angoche. In most sections, erosion has damaged the roads. Teams
from the ANE administration are already on the ground, according to a statement
from the institution at the provincial level.
The electricity sector is also in chaos. Some districts
are without power, and due to the extent of the destruction, it will take many
days to restore it. (Gabriel Cassimo)
