Nampula: INGD opens four accommodation centers for Dikeledi cyclone victims

The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) has been working tirelessly to assist the victims affected by Cyclone Dikeledi in the province of Nampula, northern of Mozambique. As part of these efforts, it has established four accommodation centers for the affected families.

In an informative note accessed by Mozanorte, the INGD reported "So far, four accommodation centers have been opened, hosting 722 people. Of these centers, three are operational, and one has already been closed, demonstrating the immediate and organized response of the authorities to mitigate the impact of the disaster."

The INGD also expressed its condolences for the loss of lives. At least five people lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries "Unfortunately, the cyclone resulted in five fatalities, spread across the locations of Nampula, Mossuril, and Angoche, with the latter being the most affected, with three deaths. Additionally, four injuries have been reported, but there are no records of missing persons."

Cyclone Dikeledi also had a severe impact on social infrastructure, with 7,420 houses partially destroyed and 3,381 completely devastated.

According to the institution, the education sector was also significantly impacted, with 82 schools and 192 classrooms affected, which has disrupted the education of over 16,000 students and 224 teachers.

The damage to roads and agriculture, one of the region's main economic activities, was also extensive.

The INGD reaffirms its crucial role in coordinating emergency responses and assisting the most vulnerable communities.

Cyclone Dikeledi devastated the province of Nampula, affecting all coastal districts, with particular emphasis on the district of Mossuril, which, to this day, remains without electricity, leaving more than 45,000 families in the dark. (Gabriel Cassimo)
