Wimbe Beach and the risk of contaminating marine biodiversity

There is a perceived need for intervention at Wimbe Beach to prevent the trash from posing a threat to marine biodiversity.

Along the shore of Wimbe Beach, the postcard of Pemba, there is a large accumulation of trash and other solid waste. The location, which attracts tourists, has become unrecognizable.

The beach, which is the busiest in the city of Pemba, is in poor condition in terms of hygiene. Plastic waste, PET bottles, and other debris are visible, damaging the beauty of this lovely beach. The people of Pemba complain that, despite paying the waste fee along with their electricity bills (credelec), waste management in the city is still inadequate and insufficient.

Upon arrival, one can immediately notice the accumulated trash along the coastline. However, the youth of Pemba are calling for more trash bins to be installed in order to better control waste in the city.

If the situation continues, Pemba risks becoming one of the dirtiest cities in the country due to the lack of waste management control.

However, the cleanup efforts have already started, but they are not enough to keep the famous beach clean. The municipal council of Pemba and civil society organizations held a large-scale cleanup campaign on January 11 to reduce the trash that detracts from the aesthetic of Wimbe Beach.

In fact, Mozanorte was informed that the organizations that participated in the previous cleanup campaign will join again on Sunday, the 19th, to discuss the cleanup and the fundraising campaign to support the victims of Cyclone Chido. (Sifa Artur)
