Cabo Delgado: While Mecúfi voters rebuild, authorities close the electoral process

The electoral management body of the Mecúfi district, in southern Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, has destroyed the ballots from the 7th General Elections of 2024.

The act took place on the afternoon of this Friday, starting at 2 p.m., with all valid, invalid, protested, and counter-protested ballots being destroyed, along with others at the side of the District Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) of Mecúfi.

The event was attended by 11 members of the District Electoral Commission, five technicians from the Technical Secretariat of Electoral Administration, and three members from political parties.

Following this, the guidance of the provincial STAE is awaited for the evacuation of the ballot boxes and their respective kits.

This act takes place at a time when voters are facing difficult moments due to the effects of the tropical storm named Chido on December 15.

For these families, whether the ballots are destroyed or not make no difference, as their priority right now is reconstruction and receiving government support in light of the hardships they are enduring. It should be noted that Mecúfi is the district most devastated by Cyclone Chido. (Libério Dinis)
