The population of Nacala Porto, in the province of Nampula, northern Mozambique, is rebuilding their homes after the destruction caused by Cyclone Dikeledi and heavy rains, even after the phenomenon has passed.
Five days after the cyclone passed, the residents of Nacala Porto began rebuilding their houses. Some with resources, others without. It is the only way, with or without government support, to find a place of shelter.
In addition to the material damage, the strong winds and intense rains also brought many diseases to the communities in the district, affecting people of all ages. As a result, many have gone to local hospitals, especially in the mornings following the cyclone.
As a reporter for Mozanorte, I spoke with a bricklayer who explained the work being done these days. He said that due to high demand, there is a great need for master builders, which has caused prices to rise compared to previous rates.
"Those who agree to the higher prices are the ones who get hired," he said.
The bricklayer also mentioned that the prices of raw materials such as cement, sand, bamboo, poles, and plastic have increased due to higher demand. This is a good opportunity for some traders in Nacala-Porto.
Since the reconstruction began, the district authorities have
not yet made any statement regarding the situation. It is uncertain whether the
victims will receive support from the government or its partners.
