The Pedagogical and Management Department of the Provincial Directorate of Education and Human Development of Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique, reported that eight districts were affected by Cyclone Chido, with four being the most impacted.
These are Mecufi, Metuge, Chiúre, and Namuno, which suffered more compared to the districts of Pemba, Montepuez, Ancuabe, and Balama. All signs indicate that the education sector, which is preparing for the opening of the 2025 academic year, has suffered considerable losses in terms of school infrastructure.
According to the spokesperson for the Provincial Directorate of Education and Human Development, three educational, youth, and technology services were affected. Drastically, 337 schools were destroyed and a total of 1,419 classrooms were damaged.
He stated that this has had a negative impact on students and teachers, affecting the entire school community, with 108,164 students being impacted.
So far, in Cabo Delgado, there is no plan for
the reconstruction of the affected schools, and it is expected that many
children will study in the open air. (Sifa
