Niassa: Mecanhelas: poor conditions of the Insaca market worry fish vendors; in rainy days, the market situation worsens

Fresh fish vendors at the central market in the municipal village of Insaca, in Mecanhelas, are calling for the construction of an appropriate space to develop their business.

The market does not offer adequate conditions, according to our interviewees. The difficult situation is more noticeable on rainy days, when the area floods, causing discomfort for customers due to the degraded market awning.

"As you can see, our place is disorganized. And when it rains, we run to the neighbor's house," said Anifo, a fish vendor.

Another source added "Look at how the floor is. It's very dirty. Customers come here and start complaining, they can't buy our fish because the floor is dirty," said António, another vendor.

They say that, despite being charged daily taxes, nothing changes "Those men always come here, give us a slip, take ten meticais, but they can't organize our place so we can be better," complained Anifo.

"This market generates revenue daily. We pay a daily tax. Why is it in this condition?" questioned vendor António.

The vendors are asking for improvements to the space's conditions "We want them to try to organize this market. We need a roof to be in a proper place. We are worried about this," said Arlindo, a vendor.

"Let those men organize things so we can live better," demanded vendor Anifo.

In fact, the lack of a proper space for fish sales was also raised during the Municipal Assembly of Insaca at its V Ordinary Session held last December. (Jaime Paculeque)
