Temporary shelter center established for victims of the storm in the Lago district

Accomodation Center in Metangula

The storm that surprised the residents of the village of Metangula, in the Lago district of Niassa province, north of Mozambique in the early hours of the last day of 2024 (31-12-2024), displaced several families, leaving them without food, as the rain soaked all of their belongings, including food products.

On Wednesday, January 1, 2025, the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) opened a temporary shelter at the Sanjala primary school in the municipal village of Metangula, where 23 families, totaling 127 people, are being housed and provided with food assistance for three daily meals.

"In this shelter, we have 23 families who are in a terrible situation, some are sleeping on the verandas here and receive food support for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The others were accommodated by relatives in other neighborhoods," stated Victor Salimo, District Delegate of INGD.

Mónica Miguel and Catarina André, victims of the storm currently sheltered at the center, expressed satisfaction with the support they have received and urgently requested help to rebuild their homes, as living in their current conditions is difficult.

"We are okay here, we receive food, buckets, mosquito nets, and tarps, but we are asking for help to rebuild our homes so we can leave here," said Mónica Miguel and Catarina André.

Regarding the duration of stay at the shelter, Victor Salimo stated that the center will be deactivated soon. At this time, the families are trying to reorganize their homes and are being supported with tarps for roofing. However, for those whose homes have zinc roofing, there are no immediate resources available for assistance. (David Muianga)
