Displaced people
from Mocimboa da Praia, Quissanga, Macomia, Nangade, and Ancuabe are now
benefiting from free registration for identity documents in the Chuiba
neighborhood, on the outskirts of Pemba city, in Cabo Delgado province northern
of Mozambique
This
registration process began in 2022, continued through 2023, and was supposed to
conclude in 2024 but was halted for unclear reasons.
During the
registration period, there were numerous complaints from citizens who did not
receive their actual identity cards (BI). The project, funded by the International
Organization for Migration (IOM), was initially limited to issuing birth
certificates and narrative birth certificates rather than the identity cards
themselves.
This year, the
process has been restarted to benefit displaced people from the same districts,
although most of them have already returned to their original districts.
The
beneficiaries are now seeing results, with many reporting better responses in
terms of receiving their documentation. "Identity cards are being issued,
and collection is happening normally," said one woman who had just picked
up her document.
"The
project is achieving great results among its users, and there is high
engagement," said a technical worker involved in the process.
According to the
leader of the Chuiba neighborhood, this initiative provides relief for
residents who lived for many days without identity documents. (Seven Mussa)
