Initially reported on social media and later confirmed by the
Mozanorte newsroom, the news of attacks in several areas of Montepuez and Mocimboa
da Praia districtis, Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, are indeed true.
On February 3, 2024, in the Montepuez district, specifically in the village of Nicocue.
Insurgents linked to the Islamic State attacked the village of Nicocue in the Montepuez district, Cabo Delgado province. The village was looted, but fortunately, no confirmed fatalities have been reported so far. The local population is on high alert and fleeing, fearing further attacks. Many residents have moved to the headquarters of Mirate.
In the Mocímboa da Praia district, specifically in the village of Mitope, on February 2, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack on an army barracks, likely of the Mozambican military. During the attack, the insurgents seized weapons and ammunition, as well as setting fire to around 20 houses and shops in the village.
The action caused panic among residents, who feel increasingly
vulnerable to these violent insurgent actions, while complaining about the weak
response from the forces on the ground. (Mozanorte)
