Residents of the municipal town of Insaca in
Mecanhelas, in Niassa province in northern of Mozambique, have expressed
disappointment with the results of the rehabilitation works on the road that
provides access to the Mutapiri neighborhood. The citizens are particularly
critical of the installation of drifts instead of culverts.
The road improvement works, which extend from
the former bus stop to the Mutapiri neighborhood, began on October 2, 2024,
with an expected completion time of two months.
Covering nearly 1 kilometer, the project is
being carried out by the company AC Construções, and is budgeted at 7 million
meticais.
The road in question has long been a “thorn in
the side” for motorists, especially during the rainy season, due to the marshes
that flood the road. There was hope that the rehabilitation would address these
issues.
However, surprisingly, the results have not
met expectations. Instead of the expected culverts, the road has been equipped
with drifts.
“It’s inconceivable that with the cost we’ve
heard, they’ve done this. First, we had dirt roads, and now this instead of
culverts,” criticized one resident.
Residents regret that the works have not
improved traffic flow. In addition to the poor quality, the delay in completing
the works has worsened circulation in the area.
“It was even better before. Now, it seems like
the situation has gotten worse instead of better,” complained a cyclist.
Clarifying the situation, Damião Lissimba, the mayor of Insaca, stated that this was not the original plan and explained the reasons behind it.
“That’s not what we expected. We were hoping
for a bridge. The contractor surprised us by saying there was not enough money
to build a bridge, so they constructed drifts instead,” said the municipal
council president, offering an explanation for the disappointing results of the
road rehabilitation project in the municipal town of Insaca. (Jaime Paculeque)
