Fisherman's Body found in Ilha de Moçambique after drowning incident

At around 3:30 PM on February 16, 2025, the Coastal and Inland Police (PCLF) of Ilha de Moçambique received a report from the local population in the Jembesse neighborhood, near the bridge, about the presence of a lifeless body floating in an advanced state of decomposition.

According to a source from the authorities, the body was identified as belonging to Omar Abudo Taquali, a 74-year-old unmarried man, born on October 15, 1951, in Lunga-Mussuril, and residing in Ilha de Moçambique, specifically in the locality of Ampapa.

Taquali was a fisherman by trade and was recognized by his family, including his son Abudo Taquali and Zena Jamal.

Following the alert, a multi-agency team comprising the PCLF, the National Public Health Service (SENSAP), the Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), and health authorities was dispatched to the scene. The team conducted a post-mortem examination, which confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to drowning.

Maritime authorities have been increasing awareness  campaigns and safety lectures in an effort to reduce accidents like this, which remain common in the region. (BP)
