A severe food crisis, caused
by extreme climatic events during previous agricultural seasons, is
intensifying throughout almost the entire district of Mecanhelas in Niassa
province. Some people are resorting to wild products for food, while others,
when they manage to get some money, buy maize bran, which is currently the main
food for families in this part of Niassa Province.
In response to this
situation, on Thursday, January 30th, the district proceeded with food
distribution to 86 people from various locations within the Insaca
administrative post, providing relief for a few days. Each beneficiary received
10 kg of rice and 2 kg of beans.
The products were provided
by the INGD.
On this occasion, the
District Administrator, José Achida Assane, encouraged the families to continue
engaging in agricultural activities while they are being fed, given the
promising rains currently being felt in the district, with the aim of improving
the situation in the coming days.
It is important to note
that, according to the latest data provided by the agricultural sector, more
than 2,500 families are facing hunger in the district of Mecanhelas. (Jaime Paculeque)
