The
city of Pemba experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds on Thursday, February
20, 2025, which caused significant damage. Several houses, small verandas, and
structures were destroyed, while flooding blocked roads in neighborhoods such
as Chuiba and Natite.
Chuiba,
located near the beach, was one of the hardest-hit areas, with stronger winds
making the situation even more alarming for residents. Many people were left in
a state of panic, as the memories of past cyclones remain fresh, and the fear
of a repeat disaster arises every time there are similar storms.
Some
families were forced to leave their homes and seek shelter in safer locations
to avoid the risk of their homes collapsing due to the lack of proper
structural security.
Several
access roads, especially those that are unpaved, suffered significant damage
from the flooding and strong winds, further complicating movement within the
affected neighborhoods.
The
local authorities have been assessing the damage and urge residents to remain
vigilant as weather conditions may continue to pose risks in the coming days. (Sifa Artur)
