Public infrastructure destroyed by December storm remains abandoned in Metangula, and the government still has no budget

More than a month and a half has passed since the village of Metangula in Niassa Province was hit by the storm on December 31, which resulted in the destruction of several public and private infrastructures. To this day, the public infrastructures remain abandoned, and their services have been relocated to other institutions.

This includes the District Service of Economic Activities, IPAJ, and the District Planning Department. The Provincial Government states that there is still no budget for reconstruction.

Celestina Teófilo, the Provincial Director of the Environment in Niassa, representing the Provincial Government, stated that the government still has no approved budget and, at this moment, nothing can be done.

The approval of the state budget by the National Assembly is still pending. "We are at the beginning of the year, and we do not yet have budget limits. Our state budget has not been approved yet. Once it is approved, the infrastructures can be rebuilt," said the government official.

Celestina Teófilo made these comments during a visit last Friday to the Lago District, where she assessed the situation following the storm on February 11 of this year. (Davide Muianga)
