Alleged Special Forces Captain arrested in Cabo Delgado for suspected links to terrorist groups

Chitunda, Cabo Delgado – May 2, 2025 A man identified as Chabane Saide Niquere, a 53-year-old captain allegedly affiliated with the Nacala Special Forces Training School, has been detained by Local Forces in Chitunda, Muidumbe district, under strong suspicion of collaborating with terrorist groups operating in northern Mozambique.

The arrest, carried out without a legal warrant, occurred while the officer was transporting 20 young men, aged between 19 and 29, from Nacala Porto in Nampula province. The group was intercepted in his vehicle during a routine check.

According to reports circulating on social media, the passengers are suspected of being part of active terrorist cells in Cabo Delgado. Following the interception, both the captain and the suspects were taken to the Local Forces command in Mueda for interrogation.

Sources claim that Captain Niquere’s background raises serious concerns. After serving in the Special Operations Theater in Afunge (Palma), he reportedly never returned to his original unit and instead began operating informal transport routes between Nacala and Palma.

Social media accounts suggest that he had previously been warned about transporting suspicious individuals, although there is no official record of disciplinary action taken against him.

During initial interrogations, eight of the detainees claimed they were heading to Mocímboa da Praia and Palma for fishing activities. However, they had no familial ties to the region and admitted it was their first time in Cabo Delgado—raising further suspicion.

Preliminary intelligence assessments reportedly indicate that Captain Niquere may have acted as a collaborator for insurgent groups, playing a role in recruiting young men from Nampula province. However, no concrete evidence has yet been provided to support the accusation.

There are also unconfirmed reports suggesting he provided sensitive information about Defense and Security Forces (FDS) positions in exchange for large financial rewards. Military sources further allege that the captain wore official uniforms to deceive checkpoints, posing as if on legitimate missions.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the captain’s involvement and to uncover any connections between the detainees and terrorist networks operating in the region. (Mozanorte)
