Since June and July 2024, the district of Liúpo has been the
site of a youth recruitment initiative under the Emprega Jovens project.
Selected participants received training in various vocational fields, including
tailoring, agriculture, livestock farming, carpentry, culinary arts, and more.
The training sessions took place in the district headquarters of
Liúpo in Nampula província and involved people from multiple villages,
localities, and administrative posts. Many left their families behind children,
siblings, and spouses in hopes of building a better future.
The training activities continued until January 2025. Upon
completion, many participants received certificates and waited for the
fulfillment of promises made by the project, such as the delivery of work kits
to help them start their professional activities.
Following graduation, Emprega Jovens gathered the trainees and
advised them to form work groups to facilitate coordination and project
implementation. Participants were also asked to open bank accounts, with the
assurance that each beneficiary would receive around 60,000 meticais to
kickstart their businesses.
However, since the bank accounts were opened, no funds have been
deposited. The lack of communication and progress has caused growing
frustration and despair among the youth, many of whom were confident they would
soon be launching their own ventures.
