Mecula, May 14, 2025 — Starting at around 6:00 p.m. on May 12,
the district of Mecula, in Mozambique’s Niassa province, experienced another
night of tension as armed Masheik groups attacked the village of Macalange,
causing widespread panic.
According to local reports, there are no confirmed fatalities so
far, but several homes were set on fire, and others were abandoned.
Witnesses say the attackers were primarily motivated by the
search for food, as this is currently harvest season in the area, and crops are
being collected from local fields.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but sources
report a growing atmosphere of fear and displacement in areas surrounding the
attacked village.
Mecula’s district headquarters, previously considered relatively
safe, had already received around 1,500 displaced families due to earlier
attacks in the Niassa National Reserve area on April 19 and 29.
