Desportivo and
Ferroviário de Nacala are major football teams, well-known throughout the
Northern Zone of Mozambique. They have a large fan base not only within the
district but also in neighboring districts of Nampula Province. Both teams
often participate in the Moçambola league, as they are doing this year.
Although they
are from the same city, there's a strong rivalry between the two especially
among their fans, even more so than between the players themselves. This year,
both teams are competing in Moçambola, and the match that caused unrest among
fans was a league fixture that pitted the two city rivals against each other.
The match took
place on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Ferroviário de Nacala’s home ground. The
stadium was packed that day, with high tension from both sides. After
Desportivo secured the win, there was almost a clash on the field, particularly
because some fans had placed bets and the result triggered confrontations.
The defeated
team had been in an eight-day training camp at their own stadium under club
instructions, which was also the venue for this heated match. All this added to
the tension, and fans of the losing side began throwing insults at their
rivals, which led to conflicts spreading to local neighborhoods.
It has been
five days since the match, yet fans are still debating it daily in the streets
and markets. Supporters of the losing team refuse to accept the result,
demanding a rematch to “see what will happen.”
This rivalry
goes back many years. Fans of the losing team promise that next time the two
teams meet, they will perform better and even claim victory.
