On Friday, May 24, 2025,
journalists from various media outlets in Cabo Delgado province participated in
a workshop on "Media and Human Rights Institutions", held under the
theme: "The Dynamics of Electoral Processes and Their Consequences in
Mozambique."
According to Jeremias Langa,
President of MISA Mozambique, the workshop was a joint initiative between MISA
Mozambique and the National Human Rights Commission, with support from UNESCO.
Its main objective was to promote critical and participatory reflection on the
dynamics of electoral processes in the country and their impact on political
stability, social justice, and the fundamental rights of citizens.
"Through this
partnership between MISA and the National Human Rights Commission, we aim to
act in a coordinated manner in denouncing, monitoring, and demanding
accountability for violations of press freedom, freedom of expression, and
fundamental human rights," stated Jeremias Langa.
Langa further noted that the
post-electoral crisis the country has faced since October 2024 is profound and,
if not addressed with courage and dialogue, could seriously impact social
cohesion and national peace.
"Today, we are called
to reflect on how media professionals and human rights defenders can and must
contribute effectively and ethically to help the country find its way back to
stability and democratic consolidation," said Langa.
He emphasized that the
meeting should serve as a platform to gather concrete ideas on how the media
and human rights defenders can contribute to just and lasting solutions.
"There must be a turning point in the role of the media and defenders, as
strategic actors in building a democratic, pluralistic, and just future for all
Mozambicans," he concluded.
For his part, Albachir
Macassar, President of the National Human Rights Commission, stated that
journalists must be critical mediators more than just informers, they must also
educate and mobilize society.
