Military arrives in Licangano village and residents feel threatened

Licangano is a village in the Macomia district, in the province of Cabo Delgado. It is a cold region, often covered in mist.

Since the beginning of the terrorist attacks, Licangano has remained one of the few villages that has not been invaded. For this reason, many people from surrounding communities have fled there in search of refuge.

The village is located about 12 kilometers from the district headquarters.

This week, the security situation in the districts of Macomia and Muidumbe has worsened. Villages that had been reoccupied by civilians are once again on the move, as residents search for safer areas due to the growing presence of insurgents nearby.

In the area between Licangano and Nguida, terrorists have been roaming the farmland day and night in search of food. The region is surrounded by a large mountain and dense vegetation. Residents who once farmed the land have already abandoned their fields, leaving behind their crops.

On May 9, 2025, the Mozambican Armed Forces decided to deploy troops to Licangano. However, since there had never been a military presence in the village and no attacks had occurred there before, the arrival of soldiers has left residents feeling threatened. Some families have already started leaving their homes, seeking shelter in what they consider safer hiding places.

According to locals, they feel safer without any military or police presence and are calling for the troops to withdraw so they can live freely. This year, Macomia has been one of the main targets of attacks, and even the district headquarters is facing a serious security crisis.

After nine years of conflict in Cabo Delgado, this is the first time military forces beyond the local defense units have arrived in Licangano, which explains the population’s deep mistrust of their presence. BP
