Tragic. A deadly incident occurred in Chimbunila district, Niassa province, where an individual lost his life after consuming a traditional drink suspected to have been poisoned. A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the case, accused of poisoning two people over the past weekend.

The incident took place in the village of Colongo, where the suspect allegedly served a homemade alcoholic beverage reportedly laced with poison to two individuals, one of whom is of Malawian nationality. After drinking the beverage, both victims began experiencing seizures and were quickly taken to the local health center. Unfortunately, one of the men did not survive.

Nelson de Souza, spokesperson for the Niassa Provincial Command of the PRM (Mozambican Republic Police), reported that the Malawian national remains hospitalized. Preliminary investigations suggest that the poisoning may have stemmed from personal disputes.

"One of the victims was reportedly in a relationship with the suspect. As part of the ongoing investigation, the body of the deceased was transferred to the Lichinga Provincial Hospital for an autopsy. Additionally, 605 liters of the alcoholic beverage known as cacholima were seized," Souza stated.

The suspect has been taken into custody, and a formal complaint has been submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for further legal action. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate case and are urging the public to cooperate by providing any information that may assist the investigation, the spokesperson added.
